He's playing his piano. The melody, however, noticeably lacks the festive, upbeat tempo it was known to have.
Instead, he has slowed it down and lowered the key. It sounds somber. Almost, sad.]

Like you, it was something I was taught as a child. I've always enjoyed playing the piano and the like.
